Make a Copper Metallic + Iridescent Die Cut Holiday Card

Make a Metallic Copper + Iridescent Die Cut Holiday Card

This fun and festive diy holiday card project brings together a few techniques that have been favorites of mine over the past year, and the luxe and lovely Gmund dark teal cardstock (also a favorite) serves as the base.

When LCI Paper first sent me some of the beautiful Gmund cardstock to play around with a few months ago, I knew instantly that I wanted to somehow pair the dark teal with metallic copper. Over the past several weeks, an idea began to take shape and, during that time, I also became just a little bit (okay, a lot) obsessed with iridescent and metallic embossing paste.

DIY Die Cut Metallic Holiday Card

For this project, I first cut the dark teal cardstock to an A2 card size (5.5″ x 4.25″). Then, I stenciled Tsukineko green iridescent embossing paste onto the front of the card using a small dot stencil (soon to be in my shop over at k.becca) that I cut using my Silhouette Cameo. Check out a similar technique here. Then, I set it aside to dry for an hour or so.

Oh, my goodness, do I love this embossing paste. When you first apply it, it’s more opaque and doesn’t really show much iridescense, but something magical happens as it dries, and the result is a beautiful, green-tinted iridescent texture that looks fantastic against the dark teal backdrop (and probably a lot of other backdrops, too). Photos really don’t do it justice. It’s awesome.

While the embossing paste was drying, I die cut a “noel” sentiment, also using my Cameo, and I colored it with metallic copper ink using the technique that I used here. I actually mixed the Celestial Copper and Bronze Burst inks from the Tsukineko Delicata Metals Quad (the bottom 2 colors) to get just the color that I wanted.

After the embossing paste was dry, I added a bit of dimension and contrast using the irRESISTible Pico Embellisher in Wedding Dress to apply white dots over some of the iridescent dots. I allowed those to dry and adhered the “noel” sentiment to the front of the card with Tombow Mono Multi glue.

The result is a bold, modern holiday card with iridescent shimmer and metallic shine.

Disclaimer: I received the dark teal cardstock from LCI Paper and the Delicata Ink Quad from Imagine Crafts. I purchased all other supplies used in this project.

The Silhouette Cameo is one of my favorite crafting tools, and Silhouette America is currently having a huge Black Friday Sale, which is when I really like to stock up on things like blades, mats, tools, and specialty media. You can save up to 40% in their shop, and they’ve also got some great bundle deals going on their digital die cutting machines, as well as the Mint, which I recently purchased and cannot wait to try!

You can find the “noel” sentiment that I used in this project over in my shop. Discounts and deals end on Friday, December 4, 2015.

I Made a Skillshare Class!

Online Skillshare Class - Faceted Paper Art : Create a Geometric Art Piece http://skl.sh/1JkRuyy

When the peeps at Skillshare first approached me about doing an online class, my fight or flight response kicked into flight mode, big time. But life is about pushing your comfort zone, so I went for it!

My mini class, Faceted Paper Art : Create a Geometric Art Piece, just went live, and I had a lot of fun putting it together. The technique that you’ll learn in this little class can be applied in so many ways, too, so it’s crafty and versatile!

I hope that you’ll head on over to Skillshare and check it out. And who knows? You may be seeing more classes from me in the future.

Make Stenciled Glitter Snowflake Decorations

DIY Stenciled Glitter Snowflake Decorations | Paper Crave

As soon as I saw My Favorite Things’ Delicate Doily stencil, I thought, “gotta make that into a snowflake.” With this idea in mind, I designed a simple scalloped background for the stencil and got to work.

Now, I love me some glitter, but I do not love the mess that it can make. Cue the embossing paste! Embedding gobs of glitter in translucent embossing paste gives you all of the sparkle without any of the glittery mess. Gotta love that. Once the paste is dry, all you see is glitter and, with the exception of a stray sparkle here and there, it is not coming off of the paper. Like, at all.

The result? Simple, modern snowflake decorations that you can hang in windows, on walls, or pretty much anywhere that you’d like to add a little sparkle. Did I mention that it’s easy to make bunches and bunches of these, too? Yep, you can get it going assembly line-style, one glitter color at a time, and you’ll have a stack of these babies in not much time at all.

Stencil Glitter Snowflake Supplies

Here’s what you’ll need:

DIY Stenciled Glitter Snowflake Decorations Instructions

DIY Stenciled Glitter Snowflake Decorations, Step 1

Step 1 : Cut the scalloped circle shape into white cardstock with a digital die cutting machine. Line up the stencil over the die cut shape and tape the stencil onto a smooth surface over the shape with low tack tape (I used painter’s tape).

DIY Stenciled Glitter Snowflake Decorations, Step 2

Step 2 : On a large acrylic block or similar work surface, add about two teaspoons of the embossing paste (this amount will be enough for 2-3 snowflake decorations). Then, sprinkle the glitter over the paste and mix with a palette knife until the glitter is completely incorporated. If, after you’ve finished mixing, you find that you need to add more glitter, simply sprinkle more glitter over the paste and mix again.

DIY Stenciled Glitter Snowflake Decorations, Step 3

Step 3 : Spread the glitter embossing paste over the stencil with a palette knife, frosting-a-cake-style. Then, use the edge of the palette knife to smooth the paste and to remove any extra paste, and clean up any mess with baby wipes or paper towels.

DIY Stenciled Glitter Snowflake Decorations, Step 4Step 4 : Remove the tape and stencil, and set the decoration aside to dry. Wash your stencil and acrylic block as soon as you’re finished with the embossing paste, because it can be tough to clean off if you let it dry.

When the snowflake decorations are completely dry – I usually leave them to dry overnight – tie metallic thread or twine through the holes at the tops of the decorations to hang.
