A little while back, I was brainstorming Father’s Day craft ideas, and I had one of those “a-ha” moments. Don’t you just love those? These Father’s Day Shirt & Tie Gift Boxes actually make use of the favor box template that I created for my feature in the first issue of Nonpareil, with an alteration made to add a “collar”. I’ve provided a necktie template (and a bow tie template, in case your dad or husband is a bow tie kind of guy) that you can use with any patterned or solid colored paper to put the finishing touch on your own box(es). And now I’m thinking about all of the other holidays for which I can customize the template, so don’t be surprised if you see more projects that make use of it in the future!
Father’s Day Shirt & Tie Gift Boxes
Supplies you’ll need:
gift box template + bow tie / necktie template
a printer
cardstock for the box and tie(s)*
scissors
a ruler
a pen or pencil
glue dots
double-sided tape
1/4 inch circle hole punch (for bow tie box)
a scoring tool (optional)
a cutting mat (optional)
Print the box template onto lightweight cardstock, cut out along the solid lines, and assemble according to the directions found in the template file. Place your gift in the box, and use double-sided tape or glue dots to securely close the flap. Print bow tie/necktie templates, cut out, and trace onto your choice of patterned or solid colored paper. Cut out the tie(s) and attach to the box flap using double stick tape or glue dots. If making the bow tie box, punch out three 1/4 inch “buttons” using a hole punch, and attach to the front of the box using glue dots (small Zots are the perfect size).
Alternative directions: Assemble the box and attach the tie to the top flap first, and add your gift last.
These boxes will hold a variety of small Father’s Day gifts, including watches, fishing lure, small food treats, gift cards, and tech gadgets like iPod Nanos or USB thumb drives.
* The patterned paper I used for the ties is Flannel from Cosmo Cricket’s Mr. Campy collection.

I loved this idea but since I have been at cub scout camp all week my time has been very limited. Since I just found out that I would need to do the craft for Fathers day for about 50 primary kids tomorrow. I decided to simlify it by using colored bags from target (like lunch bags) trimmed off the edge because it was freyed. It turned out very cute were are going to put cookies and brownie bites into ours and have the kids pass them out to there Dads after church. thnks for the quick and easy fathers day craft!!!!
Just occasionally there is an advantage to living on the other side of the world- I have until September for Fathers Day, so I get to see what you’ve all done.

Very cute. However, I attempted to make one of these and didn’t realize how small it was going to turn out! I wish there had been something to show as comparison in the pictures, such as a gift card, since that’s about the size of them. But I managed to enlarge the template, print it out on several sheets of paper, tape it back together, and trace it onto a 12″X12″ sheet of scrapbook paper. It’s still too small to fit much in it, though, so I may try again but with 2 sheets of scrapbook paper this time. Thanks!
Hi I did this- saved my father’s day at school!- but I saw your ties are coming out much bigger. Is the template for the ties smaller than the size you used and they only look bigger because of the picture?
Shai-Ann, it could be that the ties look larger in the photos. No one else has mentioned having this issue, so I’m not sure what else might be going on?
Rachel, the box template was designed to fit onto a standard 8 1/2″ x 11″ piece of paper since most people have that size on hand.

I invested time going to the store buying two sheets of cardstock, downloading the template (of which the first link is broken), cutting the thing out, and scoring a dozen lines, and taped it all together! For 6 cubic inches of storage space! HOORAY! Please put something to show relative size! Like, I don’t know, a quarter? I think it might be 3 quarters big.
Thanks for the free template, but no thanks, I’m never making this again. I’m going to buy colored lunch bags like that other lady’s comment mentioned.

As I mentioned in a comment above, this template was meant to work with an 8 1/2 x 11 sheet of cardstock because that’s what most people have on hand. The boxes will fit things like gift cards, chocolates (M&Ms, if you so desire), fishing lure, cufflinks, a bowtie. But if you’re looking for something larger then, yes, you will probably be better served by using lunch bags.
I made these and it was adorable. One shirt and the tie on the other were made from a piece of stripy card stock, and the second shirt and the tie on the first shirt were made from an old calendar of Japanese paintings. They look adorable despite my poor cutting and sticking, and they had just enough space to fit half a box of taffy sweets each, which is PLENTY for a healthy adult.
