Pantone recently revealed that their 2018 Color of the Year is Ultra Violet, and the design community let out a collective groan. I have to admit that I wasn’t initially thrilled about this color, either. My color tastes tend toward reddish purples, deep plums, and dusty orchid hues. Violet purples have never really done it for me. However, when I took a step back and viewed Ultra Violet as more of a “sidekick”, rather than the hero of the palette, I began to see the appeal.
For me, Ultra violet isn’t a solo, but it works beautifully as part of an ensemble and fits right in with some of the trends that are shaping up to be hot in 2018 (more on that in January). It also works very well with blush, millenial pink, and the barely there peachy pinks that have been so popular recently. In addition, Ultra Violet is a great partner for all sorts of on trend blue hues, from periwinkle (which has a bit of a bluish purple tone, anyway) and electric blue to more ethereal teals and gray blues.
If you want to go bold, this color partners well with deep wine shades, as well as attention-grabbing hot pink and neon yellow. And, if you go with an Ultra Violet tone-on-tone look and bring in lighter shades, that looks pretty darn nice, too. And pssst … Radiant Orchid, Pantone’s 2014 Color of the Year, pairs well with Ultra Violet, as well.
