The Black Cat

Over the weekend, I watched the deliciously creepy The Black Cat (1934), starring both Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff. In the movie, Bela Lugosi’s character, Dr. Vitus Werdegast, has such an intense fear of black cats that he completely freaks out whenever one crosses his path.

As someone who loves cats of all shapes, sizes and colors, I can’t really relate to the doctor’s fear, but watching the movie did get me thinking about black cats. So, naturally, I started looking around for black cat-themed paper goods, and I came across this awesome screenprint by Strawberry Luna. Hmm, I wonder if a bespectacled kitty would scare the good doctor as much as non-glasses-wearing black cats did?

Sarah Trumbauer

Sarah Trumbauer Papercut

I am awed by the work of Sarah Trumbauer, whose incredible papercuts are completely hand cut from her original illustrations. Oh, the stories that her x-acto knife could tell! Her pieces are incredibly detailed, and it amazes me to think that every little star, owl feather, and dress detail was cut by hand.

You can purchase Sarah’s papercuts in both their original form and as printed reproductions from her shop.
